If you live in Raleigh, NC or surrounding areas, you know that the last thing you want in the middle of summer is to experience your air conditioner not cooling your home, or other air conditioning problems that make you wonder if you need air conditioning repair.

If you find your central air conditioner not cooling, here are some of the first steps you can take to see if it is possibly just a simple DIY project, or if you need to call an experienced HVAC technician to come an repair your air conditioner.

  1. Change your filters. Dirty filters reduce the air flow across your evaporator coils. When not enough air is flowing through the evaporator, the refrigerant is not properly heated up (your air gets cooled) and the refrigerant may stay so cold that it begins to freeze up the evaporator coil.
  2. Check if the outside fan and compressor is running. If the outside fan is not running the indoor heat is not being removed from the refrigerant and your house stays warm. If the compressor isn’t working, then the system is not circulating the refrigerant which is what carries the heat from inside your home to the outside.
  3. Check to make sure nothing is blocking the vents and returns. Similar to changing the filters, blocking the vents or returns can reduce the air flow through the evaporator coil preventing the refrigerant from chilling the indoor air.

If you have gone through these steps and find that your air conditioning unit is still not cooling your home. Find an experienced Air Conditioning Repair Company you feel you can trust. When you call the technician, it will be helpful that you share with them the diagnostic steps you have taken. This will help them to better determine what it may be, and for sure what it is not which will prepare them when they come to your home.
